Premium Curly Koa Silverware Chest/Box
This silverware chest/box was made as a companion to the Plumeria box and was for a client to give as a wedding gift.
The body of the box is made of Figured Maple and the top is Premium Curly Koa. The inside of the box is lined with Aromatic Camphor which has Anti-tarnish properties. The bottom is also lined with an Anti-tarnish fabric. The hinges are solid brass.
The Acacia koa tree from which this box is constructed came from an exquisite Koa tree grown on the island of Oahu. Koa is native only to Hawaii. The tree died of a virus around 1990 and was removed by a local sawyer, Bart Potter. He named it the "Mother of Curl" as he had never, in all his years, seen anything like it.
He cut many guitar sets out of the tree and also had veneers sliced from it in a facility in Iowa. The wood then made it back to the islands. He has tried to keep track of the items made from this special tree and has begun writing a book about it. Eric Clapton has a guitar made from the MOC along with many other fortunate people. It is indeed a treasure to keep for generations. I don't imagine I will ever see such beautiful Koa come out of a tree in the remainder of my life.
